Juan graduated from the University of the Free State medical school in 2007, where he was top of his class for Surgery. He came to East London, where he completed his internship community service and met his wife, Sarah. He went on to work at Zithulele Hospital in the Transkei, and he regards this time as formative as it inspired him to pursue a career in general surgery.
Since 2013 he has been working in general surgery departments in Worcester Hospital, New Somerset Hospital and finally Groote Schuur Hospital, where he completed his specialization. He has shown an affinity for laparoscopic, hernia and vascular access surgeries.
Juan holds two master’s degrees, one from the University of Cape Town for work on Laparoscopic appendicectomy and another from the University of Edinburgh, where he was awarded an NIHR bursary. He is published both nationally and internationally for his work on the hernia surgery registry in South Africa.
He is especially aware of the trust afforded to him by his patients and their families when they undergo surgery, and he strives to provide them with the best care possible.
Juan is a proud and happy father to Ava and Leo. He enjoys the East London outdoor lifestyle with his family and getting stuck into a good book.
